👨🏫 Tutoring Profile
____
____
I have been tutoring since 2016. In 2016, I reached Level One CRLA Certification, and in 2017, I reached Level Two CRLA Certification. During my years at Ohio Dominican University alone I tutored over 300 students (for 153+ hours) from undergraduate and MA programs on their writing, English, Spanish and Philosophy. I gained hours of experience in working with ESL students in particular.
At the University of Cincinnati, I served as a writing tutor from 2020 to 2024. Because I began work during the pandemic, much of my tutoring experience was online (both synchronous and asynchronous) and I have tutored countless more students, from BA to PhD level, on their writing. I have also, from 2021 to 2023, served as a writing tutor for Medical students over the summer on their personal statements/statements of purpose.
From 2017 to 2018, I served as the Assistant Coordinator of both the Writing Center and the Academic Resource Center at Ohio Dominican University. Here, I trained tutors, developed training sessions, and conducted workshops. I also did administrative desk work, such as entering time sheets, making appointments, and so on. As part of my role serving as interim assistant, I also aided the hiring committee for Math Lab Coordinator and ran trial peer tutor sessions. I also, on the "back end," performed data analysis (tracking number/types of students, courses, and successes), created the end-of-year portfolio for faculty meeting and created, and re-created, countless handouts for the Academic Resource Center, the Writing Center, and the Math Lab.
Below is a selection of comments from evaluations I received during my time tutoring medical students on their statements of purpose:
"He did an amazing job helping me figure out transitions between paragraphs to fully connect the ideas and points I wanted to make."
"Specific recommendations, tutor had read my personal statement in advance and made comments, tutor sent me a marked up copy after our session."
"Joey was excellent! His feedback was detailed and appropriate, and I could tell he had taken the time to carefully read my statement and provide well thought-out suggestions. He was very supportive and encouraging as well. I incorporated all of his suggestions."
"He helped make my personal statement flow much better by improving transitions. He focused on areas I wanted to improve and offered suggestions on how to make those improvements."
"He focused on the things I really needed, like transitions and opening sentences for paragraphs. He was so great highly recommended to others!"
"Joey gave me concrete and specific examples of where I could improve without sacrificing any of the personal touches of my writing."
"Lots of help with structure, transitions, and general composition of the essay, both in noting important positive components to keep and important areas to address. Answered specific questions on the spot which was appreciated. Very professional and easy to work with."
"Joey is very thorough and very kind. He clearly put a lot of effort into editing my work and I really appreciate how he was easily able to get to know me and then use that information to inform his edits. Joey is amazing and should be considered an essential part of the personal statement writing process."
