For two weeks, I was the Program Assistant for a pseudo-foreign exchange program hosted at Ohio Dominican University for students from Tokyo Technical College. We took the students, a group of around 15, to various locations in Ohio (the Harley Davidson museum, the Ohio Historical Society, State House, Clipper's Game and more) and we hosted various events, like sports activities. While spending time with each other, we focused on practicing English (watching films with sub-titles, talking, discussing, etc) and with a select few we practiced Spanish. I look back on this experience fondly; I grew to care for all of these students, helping them achieve their goals. Interacting with others, when you have a limited ability to understand them, tells you a lot more about their character--these students were kind, caring, and gentle with each other. Some of them I even became close with, bonding over our love of games and films. If I could go back, I would change only one thing--I'd spend even more time with them.
