The latest annual Society for Literature, Science, and the Arts conference was held at the University of California, Irvine in November 2019. There was an incredibly diverse range of papers, presentations, and games demoed at the SLSArcade, which made for a remarkable week; many ideas and questions found a home here that I suspect wouldn’t have in many other settings. Unveiling and presenting my newest project Playing to Lose was eye-opening; there was such a warm reception of the research and final project. After returning from the conference, I went hard at work on version three of the game, which is now out, incorporating playtesting results and some questions from those who played. Not only was presenting a great experience, but the other sessions that were part of the game studies stream were well-put-together and thought-provoking. Many of the talks (discussing agglutination as a part of literacy of video games, analog games in the classroom, the history of games as inventions, and the roots of Chess in gaming, to name a few) were stand outs, and it was impossible to choose in some instances which to see over the others. Big thanks to SLSA for a great conference this year, and I cannot wait to see what the future of SLSA brings. I have also posted some photos from California, and below are some images of my presentation, followed by a link to the game.
