Last night, I went to Illinois to see Pierce Brown, author of the Red Rising series. He spoke for a minute or two then did Q&A for the whole hour, which was followed by a signing line.Β
Some of the highlights for the Q&A were learning that Sevro, a fan favorite, was initially a tertiary character that grew as he introduced him to Cassius and Darrow (the dynamic between the three convinced him to keep him around). He was also asked if Sevro liked Taylor Swift, to which Pierce Brown told the question asker "I knew you were trouble when you walked in."
My favorite thing he told us, though, was that he tries to write using terms "but" and "therefore" instead of "and," which is a rather famous idea now thanks to the creators of South Park. But in addition to this, Pierce says that he wants his fight scenes to not just feature physical actions that are impactful, but the theme and emotion must coincide with the action. He was asked if he'd return to this universe down the line, and he said he would--especially time periods before the story or while Darrow is in the box.Β
He also said his favorite line he's written is: "Don't fear for me, pity them." Which makes it onto my signed page! It was a blast, and I can't wait for the seventh and final book--hopefully much sooner!
