Course Description: This course focuses on analysis as in the search for meaningful patterns [and] emphasizes practice and reflection . . . we will also [read] texts that increase our . . . ability to consider, understand, respect, and empathize with the values, beliefs, practices, and needs of diverse members of society (exploring various themes through the fiction, poetry, memoirs, and essays of authors like Langston Hughes and Sui Sin Far and their understanding of racial and ethnic social relations in America).
As implied in the above description, this course had a strong diversity component, as Ohio University had recently put into practice a new program that saw composition courses prioritizing minority voices, teaching empathy alongside writing.
