In May, I was on a roundtable discussion looking at Roth's Sabbath's Theater in the 21st century: the panel discuss the book, "which has been revived as a limited-time play starring John Turturro" and asks "what does Sabbath's Theater mean to readers now, nearly thirty years after it won the 1995 U.S. National Book Award in 1995?"
Date and Time: May 23, 2:30 PM-3:50 PM
The roundtable was, as usual, fantastic. I spoke about the theme of suicide as it pertains to social media (being a way of bridging generations of readers/audiences), Aimee Pozorski also touched on suicide in the novel, Matthew Shipe discussed teaching Sabbath's Theater in his literature courses, Derek Graf talked about the play, providing an insider look as his wife worked on the stage adaptation, and Andy Connoly discussed questions of the complex nature of Sabbath as a character. Many of these remarks will be expanded as pieces in the upcoming fall issue of Philip Roth Studies, so if you are interested, you can find my remarks, and others, there. As always I look forward to next year's panels!
